On the 24th of March, 1882, renowned German physician Dr. Robert Koch announced the discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria behind the global fortunes of the TB disease. Today, the day is marked every year as World Tuberculosis Day. Until fully eliminated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World TB Day won’t be celebrated but observed as an occasion to educate and extend awareness about the ways to tackle the spread of the infectious disease.
The Covid-19 pandemic heavily impacted the fight against TB, leading to an increase in the death rates. Tuberculosis deaths rose for the first time in a decade after the pandemic outbreak.
“Invest to End TB. Save Lives,” is the theme for 2022 TB Day. Through sufficient investment and resources can the fight against TB be won.
